Brothers Burn Mountain, Irish Piper Tom, Human Empires, Sweet Colleens

Brothers Burn Mountain: They may be a blur of motion when they perform live, but on their new release, “When You Crave a Sweetness,” The Brothers Burn Mountain show that they’re also inventive songwriters whose musical panorama extends beyond simple, athletic energy.

Recorded [in part] at Sparta Sound Studios in Sparta, Minn., with Rich Mattson at the helm, the new disc shows it’s impossible to pin this duo – brothers Jesse and Ryan Dermody – down to any definitive sound or style, as they simply career from track to track with the abandon of a rabid dog in a vigorous mash-up of sensibilities.

Irish Piper Tom: Tom Klein plays the uilleann pipes, often called the Irish pipes. The uilleann (pronounced ill-en: Irish for “elbow”) pipes are the bagpipe of Ireland and one of the world’s most complex folk instruments. Incorporating a sweet, rich tone and built-in chordal and rhythmic accompaniment, the uilleann pipes possess a character and soul not found in any other instrument: at once beautiful, haunting…and appropriate for so many of life’s great moments and occasions. Tom lives in the richly-diverse Irish traditional music community of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Human Empires

Sweet Colleens: The Sweet Colleens are Jeremy Greenhouse, Pete Sandvik, Dave Bade, Dave Bille, and Wolf Loescher — accomplished multi-instrumentalists who together fuse their diverse musical backgrounds into a high-energy, infectious, and crowd-pleasing mix of “fiddle-infused, accordion-fueled, celti-cajun folk pop.” With rootsy original songs, warm vocal harmonies, and fiery instrumental arrangements, the Twin Cities-based Sweet Colleens are winning fans across the country.
